Train Trip Part II - Toronto

Ahhh, Toronto....how I loved you.

First thing was first - we met Christielli for dinner. My first blog meet up! She took us on the subway and a street car - which you have to cross a lane of traffic to board - it felt so wrong but it seemed to work.

The subway stations we saw in Toronto were rough - imagine the subway stations you see on Law and Order....grungy - well used. The Skytrain stations in Vancouver are clean-cut, preppy, Harvard students in comparison.

We weren't sure about the CN Tower - it wasn't high on my priority list and Brad's totally afraid of heights. But he got up the nerve and we went up. He warns me to stay away from him and "Don't touch me" when we are in these situations. Oh - and no sudden movements. Ok then.

I had issues stepping on the glass floor but I did it. I turn around and Brad is standing on it too.

As if.

We went outside - holy shit is that tower ever tall. I actually had issues walking out the door, Brad breezed through like it was nothing. We were on the 21st floor of our hotel - which seemed high - but you can see how small it is in comparison.

They had metal grating up outside so stupes don't lean over the railing and fall off the tower. The most I could do was reach over and test how strong it was with my finger. I turn around and some IDIOT had jumped over the railing and was lying on the metal grates so her boyfriend could take a photo of her. She's lucky the engineers over-design shit like that to protect idiots like her.

We HAD to go in the CBC building. If there was a way to see The National set, we would have...nerds. Instead we dropped $120 at the CBC store. It's not like there isn't one in Vancouver but it seemed more exciting to see the Toronto building.

Also - there was a super cool museum in there that we combed through - do you remember the train from Mr. Rogers?! It's the real deal!!! There was also memorabilia from The Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup - the tickle trunk and actual set from Friendly Giant were THERE.

After that we just walked around - West Queen West, I wanted to see Much Music (a big part of my teenage years, not the same today) and Bay Street - all the suits rushing off to their cottages at the lake - or so we assumed.

 Then - Jays game!!!

We spent an INSANE amount of money on beer and hot dogs. Two hot dogs were $13, two beers were $20. And peanuts. But you HAVE TO!!! At least it was Alexander Keith's and not some crappy watered-down draught beer.

We had amazing seats - along the third base line, super close. Plus we could see the CN Tower - which set the scene perfectly.

They played the Phillies and won 3-0. Not the most exciting game - there was a bad call on second base, yelling and screaming by the coach, but that's about it. The crowd was super happy, they played lots of music (who knew?!) between innings and the weather was perfect.

The next day we walked over to Kensington Market which Christielli had shown us. It was very cool and eclectic. We stopped for gelato and a naked bike ride went past - it was awesome. This guy was totally waving at me.

Toronto is amazing with tons of energy. I don't know why so many people complain about it.

Ahhh, the naked bike ride! I'm sure that was unforgettable.

Glad that you had a great time in Toronto and now know that there is no reason to hate it!

Glad you made it up the CN Tower!

Also, glad that you enjoyed the Jays game. Last time I was there I was in the 500 level cheap seats. Made me feel less bad for the $ I was spending on beer and hot dogs. But I agree, you must spend it.

Glad Toronto was good to you. Can't wait to read about the other cities!

So glad you had a good time! Naked bike ride? WTF? The CBC museum was my favourite part of Toronto (though I was only there for a pitstop and didn't see much) mostly because I got to see Rusty and the Tickle Trunk. Little moments of nostalgia... And you're braver than I - I couldn't step on that glass floor even though I know it was probably safer than the elevator. I wasn't impressed with the metro there either... that Degrassi-type of realism. Shudder.

First off, I loved the line about engineers over-designing shit. It. Was. PERFECT! (And what was that lady thinking?) Secondly, I can't believe Brad was standing on the glass floor of the CN Tower. That's insane. I don't know if I could have worked up the nerve, and I'm not really afraid of heights (I think.)

I've never really had a desire to go to Toronto, but you've convinced me that it's a worthy destination. Who knew?
