We went to see an IMAX movie tonight - Rocky Mountain Express - and it was fantastic. If you have a chance to see it - do it. The history of the railroad is incredible and we should all know about it. The Last Spike is definitely high on my to-read list. I even got a little emotional seeing all the photos of the men who built the railroad. Ahem.
On the other hand, about five minutes into the movie I knew it was a bit of a mistake that I was seeing it.
You have to understand - I worry too much about stupid stuff. I hate flying because there are just WAY too many things that could go wrong. I have an overactive imagination and have no troubles thinking of the worst thing that could happen. I also have no problem believing that it could happen to me.
There are (really very cool) close-up shots of the crazy wheels in the movie. Since I have not the slightest clue in the universe how stuff like this works, seeing them in action kinda freaks me out.
(All of these awesome images are from the Rocky Mountain Express Movie website)
This train is massive. Massive. The thing must weigh as much as an office building. And there is fire and steam....so much steam - like some kind of nightmare.
Worst thing though - it seems to go really fast. And it's flying along crazy mountain passes and sometimes even through creepy tunnels through the mountains.
The thought of careening and clanking through the mountains on a track at 100 mph, trailing a gigantic cauldron of fire makes me a bit nervous.
Now, I realize we aren't taking this old steam locomotive and we aren't even going on the same (way more treacherous) route as the Rocky Mountain.....still. It's a giant train and it's kinda the same thing.
All night Brad has been giving me his sideways-you-are-crazy-glances, laughs his head off and says "the new trains aren't clanky and they don't careen....."
I know our trip is going to be super fun and I'll be fine.
(nervous laughter)

If it makes you feel better, I've taken hundreds of trips on ViaRail and I'm totally fine! :)
I can't wait to see that IMAX! I've seen all the other ones they have on right now, but my schedule hasn't yet permitted a screening of the Rocky Mountain Express.
You and Marty are exactly the same with stuff like that! Both of us were seriously considering a long distance train ride through Canada, and then we happened to look through an old CPR book that showed these SUPER HIGH (wooden) train bridges being burned to cinders. Now a train trip is out of the question (for him... I'd definitely still be game). Maybe when you and Brad return home, completely exhilarated and totally unscathed, Marty will reconsider his "no train trips" stance.
Christielli, true. But have you been on the three day straight trip? More chances of danger!
Dana - burning bridges with burning trains on them? Or the burning trestles that went down in the kelowna fires a few year ago? I know they go slow over those big bridges.....right?
Right! You'll be FINE! :)
