Strawberries & Saxifrages

We love native plants. When we go hiking we take our native plant book and identify everything we can. A couple weeks ago we went to a talk at UVic about native plants. I was excited because the author of our "native plant bible" was actually going to be there!

After a woman spoke about how she did her entire yard with native plants Andy MacKinnon talked about medicinal and edible native plants (and Sasquatches...) and actually made the entire thing really casual. It was great. Afterwards there was a raffle and we
won two native plants!!

When this little plant grows up he will be a Coastal Strawberry. Awwh!!

This is an Ovel-leaved Mitrewort. I am excited about this one because it's a Saxifrage and that is my favourite family. The flowers have gone to seed in my picture, but check out how awesome they are in the photo below.

These two guys are going to get their very own pots this summer on the balcony. The strawberry wants full sun and the Saxifrage wants moist shade so it will be interesting. Man, we really should live in a house.

Yes you really should live in a house - I had know idea about your plant identifying on your hikes! That's so awesome and nerdy at the same time.

Yes, I'm fast becoming a native plant freak as well (though, as a member of an invasive species, I am pretty tolerant). Once you divest yourself of the concept of a "weed" then the whole world's a garden.

I really like that last picture, very beautiful. We just have a balcony at our apartment, but we have lots of plants and vegetables growing on it. I also have a palm tree that has been in my living room all winter. I'm sure its aching to get back on the patio when the weather warms up.

Shouldn't we all live in a house? We have not one, but TWO magnolia trees (yes, trees!) in giant pots on our balcony. Our neighbours call our side of the balcony the 'urban jungle'. Let's make balcony gardens take over the world! :)

Rawbean - Yes, nerdy for sure but you would expect no less from me wouldn't you!?

Ben - When you actually read about where some of these plants (ie: Scotch Broom!) came from it's easier to apply the label of 'weed'.

galapagos - My aunt has been growing a palm tree in a giant pot in her yard for years, I wonder how long until it will need to go in the ground somewhere.

Dana - Again I wonder how long those trees will be able to live in pots before you have to plant them? Magnolia is definitely one of the best trees huh? Yay for urban gardens!
