Apparently there was no catch. So the digital box shows up. We install it and it's great because now we can check what is on other channels without actually turning the channel. We can see what is coming up hours, even days ahead of time with the click of a button.

We also discovered that rather than "25 extra channels" - we had all the channels. Mystery, Scream, Independant Film Channel.......it was great!
Exactly one week later the channels disappeared.
We were then left with our "25 extra channels". At least two of which are exactly the same as channels we are currently paying for. Others like The Family Channel, Business Channel and the parliamentary channel or some such nonsense we will never watch. Plus, the new channels are all over the place (63, 71, 84) so we never know which channels we have and don't have.
I know they left all the good channels on there to show us know how great the programming is - if you purchase the next level of cable. And it worked! We were excited to finally have something worth watching whenever we were in the mood.
Now that we realize they left the good channels on there to bait us, we are likely going to cancel all of our cable.
Our bill is ridiculously expensive. We have cable, internet and telephone through Shaw. The service is great, don't get me wrong - good long distance rates, the internet always works....but I don't like being played with like that.
And honestly? I watch tv so little that I can't justify the cost anymore. M*A*S*H from 5:00 - 6:00. Lost every Wednesday - which apparently you can watch online. That's about it.
Maybe it's a sign of the times with the recession meaning we have to cut costs while I'm not working. But for me, it's also a 'sign of the times' in a different way - there is nothing but garbage on television anyway and I'm tired of paying for it.
What do you think? Could you go without even basic cable?

MY GOD - just finished my exam. Intense...
I've been without basic cable for 2 years and I seriously don't miss it. There are tons o' websites for downloading any show you want, whether the show is old or new.
I like watching what I what, when I want.
Reclaim your freedom and cancel your cable!
I thought last year that I could go without TV, but I can't. End of story.
I canceled cable about a year ago - I almost never miss it. And guess what - if you cancel it they still leave you a few lousy channels if you're really desperate. Go ahead, cut it off - it only hurts for a few seconds.
I have the HD box from Shaw and love it, i like that you can tape what you want and watch it when you have time or feel like it. I don't watch TV everyday but when i want to watch the news or my favorite show i love being able to just turn it on and cue it up! HD is a wonderful thing!!!
IG - I figured you were downloading!
Rawbean - I remember that. What would you miss the most about it? That's what I'm trying to figure out right now....
Robin - Is it really that liberating?!
Ben - Kind of like ripping off a band-aid quickly huh?
Sassy - Woah - the HD box is way over my head. Don't you pay a fortune for that?! (I'm only guessing, based on what we pay for cable now.)
I have rolled with free basic cable for four years now. The main reason is that if I paid for cable, I would want the digital recorder box thing (which is crazy expensive), and then I would feel beholden to watch a lot of tv as I am paying so much for it. Instead, I pay $0 with the hope that it gets me out of the house and living more!
That is not to say that when I was home sick yesterday I did not watch a gross amount of People's Court OR that I didn't time my many naps around waking up for Bones.
: )
