Don't forget about ME...

I have a couple of friends who say that of all the people they know, I am the last one they thought would ever leave Vancouver.

When I moved there, I was 21, freshly graduated and ready to start my career. I was pretty much alone and free to create my own life. I did a lot of growing up and discovering myself in Vancouver and my warped brain seems to credit the city with how far I've come.

After a good ass-kickin' from my Mom about the way I've been sad lately about moving away, I'm ready to turn myself fully towards a new life here.
Rather than the iron grip that Vancouver has had on me, it now only has a finger on my shoulder reminding me not to forget about it.

It's easy to get around Victoria, there is no traffic, the people are friendly, the ocean is all around us, great shopping and tons of restaurants* and lots of nature to hike and explore. This summer will be interesting when the tourists come and downtown will transform.

Victoria isn't trying to be like Vancouver at all. It has it's own identity and seems comfortable with it. It's been knocking on my door for 6 months now....awh! Little Victoria!

I am more open now than ever to this place.

*We can't seem to find good, cheap sushi though. Any suggestions?

I know a little about how you feel. When I arrived (back) here in 2000 this was only the default location - my head and heart were still in Africa, where I'd been living for 15 years. Victoria now feels a little more like home, thanks in part to doing the daily photo blog, which has forced me to explore this city and discover its beauties. My family is here too, which helps.

I am astounded that BM lived in Africa for 15 years! That's amazing.

I am also loving your cartoon. So cute how you "personified" the buildings in Vic and Van. Am glad to hear you opening your heart more. I personally think the summer will be awesome there!

Ben - Wow, Africa. That's a lot more intense than moving across the water from Vancouver. Your blog inspires me as well to get out there and appreciate all that Victoria has to offer.

IG - Thanks! It took me awhile to try to capture how I perceive Vancouver/Victoria. It's all so absurd that I don't know if anyone can really understand it.

Sushi - I'm not a connoisseur but my daughter says that you probably know Fujiya (from Vancouver) - there's one here on 3624 Shelbourne St, out towards UVic - cheap franchise take-out sushi. Then, downtown there is Japanese Village on Broughton Street across from the main library.

Hi Jabba,

There are lots of great sushi spots in town. Some of them are even cheap but I can't remember which!

Azuma sushi is my favorite. Not too expensive and great experience. Can get very busy though so prepare for that. Here's some info:

Very cute illustration of Vancouver + Victoria. I dig it!
