Book Review #13

I know you've been dying for one of my in-depth Book Reviews. Sometimes I feel like I love discussing books as much as reading them. In fact, Brad pointed out that I browse the Kobo website as much as Etsy which is ridiculous. I am also a sucker for CBC radio shows about books.

Anyway.

1. The Red Garden - Alice Hoffman

I love Alice Hoffman, her writing is like magic. I also love stories that run through generations and this one is sort of like that, except that it runs through generations of people who live in one town. It's almost like a collection of short stories, but they are all related. Worth it, great read.

 2. A Wedding in December - Anita Shreve

I recently discovered Anita Shreve. I tried Pilot's Wife, but couldn't read a book about losing a husband because, well I just can't even imagine. Once I realized that her writing is amazing, I had to hunt down another book of hers to try out. This one delivers. She takes on a story from different perspectives which creates a deeper experience for the reade - which I'm totally into. I'm seriously hooked on this author.

3. The Weight of Water - Anita Shreve

I loved this book as much as the last one. The plot is fairly simple which is what makes it awesome because it could happen to anyone. This brings me further into the plot, I can relate to the characters and the book becomes a more meaningful experience for me.
Also, the way she parallels the story from the past with what is happening in the present is really well done.

4. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

This one has been on my shelf for a couple years, and I read it because I was in between books. It was okay. Generally I like the idea behind reading a book that is composed entirely of letters. But I found the main character annoying. (I know, Christielli - it's the first book thing we disagree about!) I feel like I've read another book that was set up the same way and was more successful, but I can't recall what it was.

5. The Tiger's Wife - Tea Obreht

This was an interesting read. I was a little confused at the end, but loved the story over all. I like books that jump around from the present to the past and this one does that quite well. I was a little annoyed with the main character (once again) - why didn't she tell her best friend about her Grandpa right away? Sometimes I can't get past these things.....

6. Before I go to Sleep - W.J. Watson

I was really looking forward to this book. I even saved it for the train. It has a good plot but the writing isn't great. I don't like how her journals are written like novels - who would do that in this situation? Also, okay - I understand that she forgets everything every morning. But do I really have to read about how she discovered her son and is upset with her husband for not telling her in every single chapter over and over and over and over too?

The book I'm reading right now is amazing (The Last Spike) and I think I have a few better books lined up for my next review.

What are you guys reading right now?

Sadly, I have been reading nothing with any vigour as of late. I have a stack of books waiting for attention and receiving none. However, I do have '67 on my phone for when I get stuck somewhere. I'm almost embarrassed that it's about the Leafs but I usually read lit so I just consider it balance. :-)

Embarrassingly enough, I've mostly been reading super old issues of Cosmo and InTouch on the elliptical machine at the gym. Ugh! I should probably just buy a few books and read those bit by bit instead. :)

I loved Weight of Water too. Thanks for that recommendation.

I like Hoffman too. You really need to read The Dovekeepers. It's amazing.

I was pretty meh about "before I go to sleep" too.

I won't even talk about Guernsey. ;)
