This is a special edition of my book review - the page turner edition!
I'm usually about six months behind on these books. This time I'm bringing these forward because they all belong together and I just read them.
I read 7 books in the six weeks I was off for my surgery. In the first week or two I didn't read at all - which is really strange for me. I was either too doped up on pain meds or I simply didn't have the brain power to focus on a book. So when I picked up reading I wanted light reads.
Terminal Freeze - Lincoln Child
I like this guy, he delivers a fantastic page turner every time. This one was no exception but was a little further out of my comfort zone (ice road truckers and scary monsters) but it still had me engaged. I feel like he puts more research into his books than your average top selling page turner author.
Innocent - Scott Turow
The sequel to Presumed Innocent! One of my favourite movies. This guy writes well, I find him really mellow. He develops the characters and captures my craving for a good court room drama. I'd read him again for sure.
The Chill - Ross MacDonald
Brad is in to reading old mystery books lately so I snagged this one from his shelf. I fell in love with this cover. It's one of the original "hard boiled" detective stories. There were a lot of characters so a little confusing at times, but it was really well written. I love how he set the scenes with fog through the book.
The Lure - Bill Napier
I had to throw a sci-fi in the mix. This book started out really good, lots of science behind the signal they find and a good story figuring out how they decode it. After about 1/3 of the book it turns into a car chase/run from the government action book and the science goes away. Too bad.
Heart Shaped Box - Joe Hill
I've been looking for good, creepy horror books and this one was recommended. The first 100 or so pages deliver super creepy content. Imagine seeing a ghost in your peripheral vision?! Then it just turned into a road trip through the States with a fairly typical scene at the end. The characters were interesting though - not your typical horror-book-run-of-the-mill-people at all.
The Guilty Plea - Robert Rotenberg
I've just gotten into this guy - he is what John Grisham should be! He does court room stories with a really great detective character mixed in. Plus he's Canadian so I love that it's all set in our Canadian courts. Perfect page turner.
These books got me through lots of healing so I'm grateful. I always like a page turner but I feel a bit worn out by them. I'm back to novels for now.
