Emergency Kit

The earthquake in Japan. It's so awful .....and it's my greatest fear given where we live.

We have had an earthquake kit for about five years now. Probably due to me
freaking out and being scared to death of earthquakes all the time. Give me a tornado any day over earthquakes - at least you can see it coming.

We put our kit together ourselves and it's pretty awesome. Every year around this time (my birthday) we go through it and switch out all the food and check the expiry dates on everything else. When we first made the kit we just bought cheap stuff for food - canned peas (blech), lots of canned beans (for protein).....then we realized we should actually buy stuff that we like.

So now we get Chunky soups, tuna and salmon, canned fruit, granola bars and a couple Snickers bars. Because (hopefully) at this time each year the idea is to swap everything out and actually eat it.

Some other stuff we have in there - rope, toilet paper, a good knife, wind-up flashlights and radio, matches, first aid kit....the list goes on. We also have a stash of ziggy's food and lots and lots of water.

The first year we put our kit together, the water leaked. We keep our kit in the closet in the bedroom so that sucked. Now we buy water bottles with thicker plastic, it costs more but it's worth it.

You guys should all put a kit together. Do it. Even if you don't live out here....you never know.

I'm totally putting our kit together as we speak! We have bits and pieces of a proper kit lying around here and there, but my goal this week is to put everything in one bin together.

Other things you should include (if you haven't already) are good shoes (no open toes or heels), photocopies of all your ID and/or insurance documents, and some heavy gloves to wear in case there's broken glass everywhere.

Good luck and thank you for the reminder! :)

I was thinking about your emergency kit after the Japan quake - I definitely need to get on this!

It always makes me laugh when you tell me about you and Brad eating the food out of your emergency kit....hehe....

PS Sorry about the deleted comment. I'm trying a new gmail account and its invading my blogger!

I'm always so pleased when I hear of people making/having emergency kits. We have enough food and water for two weeks (because, um, if there is an earthquake big enough that I need food and water, I'm pretty sure I'll need to take care of myself for over three days...)

We switch our food out twice a year, and donate the cans to the local food closet (since we don't actually eat much canned food in real life.) That way we don't feel like we're waiting for something really bad to happen - rather we're helping take care of hungry people in our community, with a six month layover at our house... just in case
