Smugness really bugs me

Okay, I admit this is really random, petty ranting, but it's all I've got today.

Have you ever seen the Pantene shampoo add with this woman?

Am I the only one who finds her INCREDIBLY annoying? The way she talks about her hair like it's the only thing she thinks about, and when she starts in on the "sssshhhhhh" sounds as she's acting out how she sprays it......I can just see her locked up in her bathroom for hours every morning obsessing over herself.

And did you ever notice how smug those women were in the Oil of Olay commercials that were on in the summer?! Remember her?!

Yea that Pantene lady is trying to be our best friend by telling us "her story".

Yea well we've got news for you! It isn't working!

But isn't smugness and self-centeredness what people reach for these days? Modesty and humility are not in style. It's all about brash, brainless self-confidence. In the last six months I've turned my tv on only once - the people I see there are just too weird.

The whole idea behind those commercials is to make people think it's normal (and proper) to be totally obsessed by your appearance. Those companies would love it if everybody spent an hour every morning applying 14 different products. At a certain level I don't think they even care if it's their product, just as long as your buy into that world view.
My partner likes to watch the Women's Network, and I can't believe the number of shows that are preaching this. According to them, if you don't have the right clothes, hair, cosmetic surgery and teeth you are a loser.
So sad.

Yeah if all you've got to offer us as 'your story' is a story about how you do your hair, you are a pretty sad person.

Ben:
I totally agree, the only shows I watch are cooking shows.

Ugly Monkey:
Men are also falling for this these days. I'll never forget the look of absolute disgust on Brad's face the day we came down the escalator at The Bay to see a guy sitting in one of the chairs at the cosmetic counter allowing a woman to put foundation on his face.
Unbelievable.

I totally agree with BM. So many people come off as smug, over confident. Humility should be re-taught in schools.
