I have a block of cream cheese sitting in the sun getting to room temperature. My recipe also involves pulverizing pretzels in my food processor. Let's hope it doesn't turn into a disaster baking blog post.
For now, another book review because I'm way, way, way behind and have about 20 books to tell you about.
The Book of Negroes - Lawrence Hill 4/5
Holy crap was this ever amazing. I wasn't listening to Canada Reads when this one won, but I'm sure it was no contest. A difficult read, but well, well worth it. It must have been emotionally exhausting writing it.
Persuasion - Jane Austen 5/5
I finally did it. I read the only Jane Austen book that I had left. Now I've read them all. This one was amazing. When Wentworth finally declares his love for Anne: ooohhhh shivers. Now I'll have to start re-reading them. Next up will be Mansfield Park.
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden 3/5
This one has been sitting on my shelf for years. It's funny how you pick up a book a million times and aren't in the mood, then one day.....anyway it was a really good read. It's not a book I'm going to keep (I only keep my favourites) but I'd recommend it.
Eat Pray Love - Elizabeth Gilbert 1/5
I only bought this because it was two bucks at the book sale and there were a million of them there.....no wonder because it was worth about two bucks. The writing is fine, but the woman is seriously, seriously annoying. I have no desire to see the movie and don't get what the hype was about. At all.
Atonement - Ian McEwan 5/5
Holy crap. This guy is amazing. The way he built up the beginning of this book - unbelievable. Then it totally changes and you end up on a different path......he DELIVERS on the writing, the plot, everything. I'll be reading him again.
We just got back from Russel's. We have to stop. We have an entire bookcase devoted to books neither of us has read yet. It doesn't help that they have a deal - if you buy 4 books, you get the 5th free. It also doesn't help that Brad has a book list with over 100 books on it.

Pulverizing pretzels?? That sounds like a great time!
I loved Book of Negroes when I read it. They read it in one of the senior English classes at my school, and I envy them for reading something so great. I didn't enjoy any of the books that I read for high school English.
I just can't read Jane Austen. I know, I know.
Read Memoirs way back when I was in university and loved it.
Liked the Eat and Love parts of EPL when I read it when it first came out years ago. Maybe I'd be more annoyed by it now.
Atonement and I are enemies. It depressed the hell out of me so much that I couldn't find any value in it. I just found it waaaaaay too dark!
So we agree on 2/4 of the four books that we've both read! :)
Good luck with that massive unread shelf!
Mmmmm Eat, Pray, Lunch!!!
My favorite.

Woah - two things that we differ on!! Atonement and Austen!!
Wow, I can't imagine reading Book of Negroes in high school. I wish!! The best thing we read was To Kill a Mockingbird. Other than that I remember toiling through Shakespeare?!
I can't believe this-- I've actually read two of the books on this list! THAT NEVER HAPPENS! (Not because I don't read, but b/c-- as you know-- I usually read non-fiction and self-helpy shit most of the time.)
Memoirs of a Geisha was a decent read, but same thing-- I don't need to have it in my house forever. I read Eat Pray Love several years ago (way before it was a movie) and really enjoyed it at the time. Could be because my meditation group is the same group that her Pray section is based on, but it also could be because it's like a self help book written in a narrative nonfiction/memoir style. (I LOVE THAT SHIT!) That said, Julia Roberts forever ruined the book for me. I would have preferred ANYONE ELSE in the lead role. (Okay, except Jennifer Aniston. That would have been even worse.) But now EPL leaves a sour taste in my mouth. :P
