Book Review #16

Sometimes I wonder if I enjoy reading or talking about books more. When Christielli was here last summer I think we spent a good 90 minutes in the book store wandering, pointing out books (good and bad) that we had read, comparing notes. It was great fun.

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn
Major hype around this book and man was it worth it. It had me on the edge of my seat, although midway through the build-up I guessed what was going on. Still, totally worth the read. Oh and the ending was a little anticlimactic, but how do you keep that momentum? HOW?!

That being said, I don't have an overwhelming desire to read more from this author, not sure why.

The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls
A friend of mine recommended this book years ago. I looked for it at the book sale, in Russell's and on Kobo all the time and it was either never there or never on sale. Finally someone gave me a gift card for Kobo and I just bought it full price. The next week - it went on sale. This year - it was at the book sale. What. Is. With. That??

Anyway, worth the wait. Sometimes the story was absolutely unbelievable, considering it was true. I'm shocked this woman turned out normal, much less successful. Worth the wait, but again no desire to read another book from her.

The Land of Decoration - Grace McCleen
I was pleased to grab this on sale from Kobo. It was fantastic, an interesting study of religion gone awry. Also an interesting story about a little girl totally wrapped up in herself and how she ended up that way through neglect. It really touched me, great read.

The Fellowship of the Ring - J.R.R. Tolkien
Sometimes I get overwhelmed with novels and end up highly emotional. When I end up crying or feeling depressed for no reason or I can't stop thinking about why the guy I passed on my way to work seemed so sad I know it's time to read something totally different.

This time I was TOTALLY in the mood for sci-fi and this book delivered. I haven't seen the movies and have no clue what the story is about. I'm looking forward to the next book.
(Also, on a side note I did find myself skipping over a lot of sideline information like the history of a village or the roots of a language, it doesn't take away from the story.)

Tigers in Red Weather - Liza Klaussmann
Another awesome book. I love the setting - kids coming of age one super hot summer at their cabin. Crazy dynamics, lots of intensity and told from different viewpoints - makes for an amazing novel. Read it. Do. It.

I've already read two books from the book sale this year and I'm halfway through the third. Now I just need some warm weather, to get past a looming deadline and deal with other nightmares that I'll tell you about soon. How's THAT for a cliffhanger?!

Hanging out with you in the bookstore in Victoria was mad fun. If I had unlimited funds, I would so be visiting again this summer. (Damned limited funds.)

I've read 3/5 your five books. Loved Gone Girl... I did read her other two novels, but just 'cuz I was in the mood for fast, dark reads. They were okay, but not as good as GG. I'm a big fan of The Glass Castle. I've read it twice. I also really like its follow-up too. The Land of Decoration was readable, but meh for me.

I don't think I'll ever get through The Lord of the Rings. I've tried many times.

I am going to look for the last one though!

Jen, I love your book reviews…

I can't beleive you've managed to avoid the LOTR movies and the books for this long - that's kinda awesome. When you go to watch the movies, if you do, just remember that they are a separate entity or details will drive you crazy. lol. I read them about 10 years ago - loved them. Such dense mythology to them.

And of course I meant "believe" and not "beleive". How embarrassing...

Your reading never ceases to amaze me! I've been better at picking up books these days, except the books I usually end up reading are non-fiction or self-helpy style. (I frickin' love self help books and have decided to make Louise Hay my second spouse. I know that everything is wrong with that previous sentence, but I stand by it all the same.) :)
