Book Review #2

Time for another book review! Here is a link to the first review, cause I know you're interested.

Everybody Loves Somebody - Joanna Scott
I wasn't aware that this was a collection of short stories. It wasn't too bad, a super quick read but it didn't hit me, you know? Judging by the few words I have to say about this one, I think you get the picture.

The Friday Night Knitting Club - Kate Jacobs

This was just what I was looking for in a light summer read. I'm a knitter too, so it was nice to relate to that aspect of the book. The story was interesting, the book had a bit of a surprise ending and I was satisfied with it overall. The knitting side of the story apparently worked on me because I made this apple toque for my nephew in the middle of reading it.

The Gathering - Anne Enright
I was really looking forward to this book. Alas..... On the other hand, if for some reason you want to think of sex as a vulgar act, read this book. Example from the book: "...but I lay there with one leg on either side of his dancing, country boy hips and I did not feel alive. I felt like a chicken when it is quartered." Or how about "I was talking about the meaty flower of my c^^t, under his hand."

Now, I'm no prude, but damn - she threw lines like that in when you least expected it.

Where the Heart Is - Billie Letts

This was an interesting read. A friend read it and didn't like it because of the references to Wal-Mart and McDonald's. I didn't mind it because those places played large roles in the lives of the characters. Another light read, with some great characters.

I'm taking a break from my book sale pile and picked up a Maeve Binchy - guaranteed good light summer reading. After this I'm heading to the library for inspiration, then I'll get back to the book sale pile.

For my challenge, I'm reading my 9th book of 23 for the year, and my year ends May 26, 2011. Judging by the weather and our plans this weekend (beach, picnic in the park) there is lots of reading time ahead for me.

Oooh, I love that toque! Where did you get the pattern?

OMG, those lines are awful! Every year some organization gives an award for the worst written sex scenes in books, and I think that book would def be a candidate for that prize! Yuck!

I also enjoyed "Where the Heart Is".

Oh Maeve Binchy is great summer reading! She was my face author when I was in high school. When I traveled to Dublin, they had a portrait of her in the art gallery and I got excited.

Wow, you'll have no troubles reading 23 at the pace you are going. Last year I read 35 books (my goal was 52). This year, well, I'm on book 13. It's be a busy year, I guess!

Glad you enjoyed Saxe Point - the trails, although limited are also worth checking out - there's an eagle's nest.

Don't miss the Sooke Potholes while we are having our annual week of hot summer weather - but go early in the day and park in the lot - otherwise parking can be a problem.

When you're in the library looking for inspiration, why not check out Benjamin Madison's latest, called "The Moon's Fireflies" (Oolichan Books 2010), for a light summer read?
